The San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge
Project: A joint venture of Kiewit, FCI and Manson Construction was undertaking reconstruction of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge with pre-cast concrete sections weighing 750 tons each. Timberland supplied 16 50-ton hoists required to lift the bridge sections from a barge which floated the sections out into the bay. The system included diesel hydraulic power units and a high level control system.
Challenge: The hoist system had to maintain very tight synchronization to lift bridge sections safely and level them in position despite changing current and tide conditions. Fine control through the lifts was especially required due to the limited sheer load capacity of the bridge section lift points.
Success: The synchronized lift system met all needs of the customer for safe and efficient installation of the bridge sections. Our success on this system, along with other Kiewit projects, led to Timberland being awarded Kiewit’s Supplier of the Year Award.
